Meet the Siberian Forest Cat

Lionheart Siberian Forest Cat named Cobra

THE SIBERIAN CAT

Siberian Cats are a truly unique and versatile breed of cat. I fell in love with their wild primal beauty and their affectionate almost dog-like character.  Siberians have the perfect balance of beauty, power, agility, and fun. If you are looking for an affectionate, playful cat with a great personality, a Siberian Forest Cat might be the perfect cat for you.

Siberians have a “dog like” character, manifesting loyalty and  devotion to their families much like a canine. Our Siberians are very sociable and friendly to all who visit our home. Their confident open disposition wins over even the most avid “dog person”.  Much like a dog, they enjoy being involved in every aspect of our lives, from sitting by the fire in the den, to milking our goats in the barn.

Our cats respond to being called in the same manner our dogs  do - they are highly intelligent, responsive, and quite trainable - remarkable for a cat! They adore their human families and children hold a special place in their hearts. A Siberian will follow  you around the house and garden, are very helpful in the kitchen when dinner is in progress, and when you've been away, will wait at the door WITH your dogs and happily greet you when you get home.

Our cats live harmoniously with our dogs in our home and enjoy the companionship of other pets!

Excellent physical condition:

When we were first studying cat breeds, we were attracted to the Siberian Forest Cat for their striking beauty and outstanding temperament, but also because they are an athletic cat with their primal instincts intact. The Siberian  Cats are wonderful climbers of great heights and jumpers. They are amazing hunters and they learn and adapt  very quickly to any situation. They like to walk in open spaces. They are powerful agile cats that can leap great distances and heights, sometimes appearing to fly through the air. At the same time, they love to play and will entertain you with  their clown-like antics. And while they are incredibly athletic, they are not a hyper animal and are content to settle down in the house.  They are incredibly adaptable to many different living situations and families!

Hypo-allergenic:

One of the biggest inhibitors for families to add a cat to their  home is that often someone will have an allergy. Uniquely, Siberians are often a good choice for allergy sufferers, as they  produce less FEL d1 protein in their saliva, which is responsible for most allergies to the cats. Yes, it is the saliva, not the hair, that  people are allergic to! If you suffer from a cat allergy that is not too severe, there is a very good chance that you could live happily with a Siberian Cat. In addition, neutered Siberian cats produce even less quantities of the allergen!

Specific needs and grooming

Siberian cats do not require special or intense grooming, just  occasional brushing, which will help to keep their coat in perfect condition. We personally only use a metal greyhound comb and a small slicker brush which gets down to the skin and helps to avoid any signs of matting. Siberians have a firm triple coat which is water repellent.  Even though they like water, it is important not to bathe them too often, as the hair might become less resistant to water.  A bath is only necessary if there is a special need i.e. sprayed  by a skunk, mud, etc. We do not recommend shaving or cutting the Siberian coat - it is much more maintenance as the coat grows back in. Siberians have their specific special coat for a reason. Like many  breeds of long-haired dogs, Siberians blow their undercoat once or twice a year, typically in the spring as the daylight extends and temperatures rise.

Health

Siberian cats evolved through years of natural selection in the forests of Siberia. Unlike other breeds of cats and some other animals,  they came into existence without human intervention.
Nature itself has made them perfect, enjoying vitality and good  health. While many other breeds of cats suffer from several debilitating genetic health conditions due to poor breeding  practices etc., Siberians are incredibly robust with the only genetic condition of concern being HCM. We have carefully selected bloodlines that have generations of health testing behind them and have our own breeding cats screened by our vet and OFA certify hearts. Our cats are all DNA tested as well to ensure we are only contributing to the overall health and vitality of this remarkable breed!
